  • Literature: Nasceu em 2 de Abril de 1864, em Orense, Espanha. Com dez anos veio para Lisboa, ingressando na Escola de Belas Artes, onde foi discípulo de Simões de Almeida e de Ferreira Chaves. No ano de 1888, foi-lhe concedida uma bolsa, pelo Estado francês, o que lhe permitiu frequentar a École des Beaux-Arts, onde teve como mestres Cabanel, Benjamim Constant e Delaunay. Em 1891, foi nomeado Académico de Mérito da Academia de Belas-Artes de Lisboa. Entre 1892 e 1895, viveu em Paris e foi aí que a sua obra começou a ser notada. Posteriormente, tendo regressado a Portugal, ocupou o cargo de professor de História da Pintura, como sucessor do seu mestre Ferreira Chaves. A sua obra foi distinguida por inúmeras vezes, tanto em Portugal, como no Estrangeiro, podendo ser contemplada no Museu de Arte Contemporânea, na Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, no Museu Machado de Castro, etc.

    He was born on April 2, 1864, in Orense, Spain. At the age of ten he came to Lisbon, joining the School of Fine Arts, where he was a disciple of Simões de Almeida and Ferreira Chaves. In 1888, he was granted a scholarship by the French State, which allowed him to attend the École des Beaux-Arts, where he had Cabanel, Benjamim Constant and Delaunay as masters. In 1891, he was appointed Academic of Merit at the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts. Between 1892 and 1895, he lived in Paris and it was there that his work began to be noticed. Later, having returned to Portugal, he held the position of professor of History of Painting, as successor to his master Ferreira Chaves. His work has been distinguished numerous times, both in Portugal and abroad, and can be seen in the Museum of Contemporary Art, in the Lisbon City Hall, in Machado de Castro Museum, etc.
