  • Literature: Sem dúvida um dos maiores nomes da pintura portuguesa contemporânea, Paula Rego, nasceu em Lisboa a 26 de Janeiro de 1935. Em 1951 permaneceu dois semestres em Kent, no Reino Unido, o que lhe viria a permitir o contacto com a Slade School of Arts, em Londres, que frequentou até 1956. Em 1965, expôs no ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) também em Londres (cidade onde reside actualmente) e realizou a primeira exposição individual em Lisboa, na Sociedade de Belas Artes. Esta exposição, extremamente aclamada pelos críticos de arte, viria a constituir um marco decisivo na carreira da Pintora. Quando na época foi inquirida sobre a razão de pintar respondeu "pinto porque não posso deixar de pintar". A sua obra é essencialmente de pendor neofigurativo e surrealista, distinguindo-se por perturbadoras imagens de carga erótica, recorrendo a um certo imaginário infantil. Tem sido recentemente objecto de exposições retrospectivas individuais (na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian em 1982, na National Gallery em 1992, Centro Cultural de Belém em 1997, etc...) os seus trabalhos fazem parte de inúmeras colecções Nacionais e Estrangeiras. Em 1990, foi convidada para artista associada da National Gallery e, em 1991, viria a ser a primeira artista viva a ter uma obra na colecção permanente dessa mesma instituição "O Jardim de Criveli" na então recentemente inaugurada Sainsbury Wing. A Fundação de Serralves realizou entre 15 de Outubro e 23 de Janeiro de 2005, uma importante exposição da artista Paula Rego.

    Without a doubt, one of the greatest names in contemporary Portuguese painting, Paula Rego, was born in Lisbon on January 26, 1935. In 1951, she spent two semesters in Kent, United Kingdom, which allowed her to come into contact with the Slade School of Arts , in London, which he attended until 1956.
