Murphy's book would be the first in a series of rigorous surveys published on Gothic buildings, which corresponded to the emerging interest in deep knowledge of their architecture. In the service of William Conyngham (1733-1796), an Irish politician to whom he dedicates the work, Murphy travels to Portugal, disembarking in Porto on January 8, 1789. There he obtained a letter of introduction from a merchant from the English colony to the Prior of Batalha, making a seven-day journey to the Monastery, where he arrived on January 29. He resided here for thirteen weeks, which he spent measuring and drawing the building exhaustively. From these drawings, a set of engravings opened with burin and etching resulted, presented in this work.
Fully French leather binding with spine engraved with gold irons. Tired folders with flaws and wear. Text with some humidity and acidity stains, crease and small flaws.
