Photographer, painter and anarchist . He was one of the most important names in the 1920s movement, responsible for artistic innovations in photography. Moves as a child to New York. A student of architecture, engineering and plastic arts, he began painting at a young age. In 1915, he met the French painter Marcel Duchamp, with whom he founded the Dadá group. In 1921 he made contact with the surrealist movement in painting. He works as a photographer to finance painting and, with the new activity, develops his art, rayography, or photogram, creating abstract images (obtained without the aid of a camera) but with the exposure to light of objects previously dispersed on the photographic paper . As a filmmaker, he produces surrealist films, such as L'Étoile de Mer (1928), with the help of a technique called solarization, which partially reverses the tones of the photograph. Moves to California in 1940 to explore the expressive possibilities of photography. There he gives classes on the subject. Six years later, he returns to France. In 1963, he published the autobiography Auto-Portrait. "Instead of painting people, I started to photograph them, and I gave up painting portraits, or rather, if I painted a portrait, I wasn't interested in looking similar. I finally concluded that there was no comparison between the two things, photography and painting. that cannot be photographed, something that arises from the imagination, or a dream, or an impulse from the subconscious. I photograph things that I don't want to paint, things that already exist.", by Man Ray
