Biografia

    Biography

Gil Heitor Cortesão, born in 1967 in Lisbon, reverses the traditional painting process by applying oil paint to one side of Plexiglass sheets and choosing to display the unpainted side.

He studied Fine Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon (1985-90) and received a Scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino, Italy (1991–92)

Conceptually, he defines his role as an artist to keep alive the utopian ideals of modernism, expressed through interior design and architecture.

He frequently uses photographs from various sources as inspiration, many of them related to the modernist architecture and design of the 1950s, 60s, or 70s. He deconstructs contours and surfaces, evoking new situations and unexpected associations. Much of his recent work focuses on exploring liminal spaces – thresholds, borders, transitions.

His work is represented in various collections, including: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), ARCO Foundation (Madrid), EDP–Electricity of Portugal (Lisbon), Serralves Foundation Collection (Porto, Portugal), António Cachola Collection (Elvas, Portugal), or Museé d’Art Moderne Grand–Duc Jean – Mudam (Luxembourg), among others.
