Trata-se de uma raríssima publicação luxuosa de gravuras que apresentam retratos de figuras proeminentes da nossa história todas gravadas por Jean Cardini artista italiano que trabalhou largos anos em Lisboa. Desta notável serie precursora da famosa e mais vulgar "Retratos dos grandes Homens" em formato menor, diz Ernesto Soares na História da Gravura em Portugal (Nº 411): " Esta colecção saiu primitivamente apenas com seis numeros....Era distribuída com capas de papel de embrulho azulado, uma folha de texto com a biografia do retratado e a estampa em oval. O primeiro numero trazia impresso na capa os seguintes dizeres à maneira de frontispício: Templo da Gloria dos Lusos...Estes dizeres até à indicação da venda aparecem nos outros cinco numeros impressos sobre um rótulo de papel branco colado na capa, deixando para ser preenchido à mão o número do fascículo e o nome do retratado..." e termina dizendo" A única colecção que conhecemos era do antiquário Henrique Coimbra e essa mesmo com, falta de uma estampa." O conjunto que aqui apresentamos e que corresponde inteiramente à descrição do ilustre bibliógrafo, aumenta significativamente o numero de retratos publicados para 16. Todos apresentam a folha de texto e a brochura de apresentação. Nestas condições conjunto de evidente raridade e grande significado artístico e bibliográfico. Imperfeições e manchas ocasionais quase sempre marginais.

    This is a very rare luxurious publication of prints that feature portraits of prominent figures in our history, all engraved by Jean Cardini, an Italian artist who worked for many years in Lisbon. Of this notable precursor series of the famous and more common "Portraits of the great Men" in a smaller format, says Ernesto Soares in the History of Printmaking in Portugal (Nº 411): "This collection came out with only six numbers.
