    Notes:

The design of this processional cross, cuts with the Gothic influence and appears under the influence of the Italian Renaissance. The Spanish goldsmith Francisco Becerril, responsible for the new aesthetic in Spain, was the author of some similar pieces.
We call attention to the quality of this work, namely in the richness of the decorative elements, finely chiseled. One of the most interesting elements is the representation of Monte do Calvário, like the cross flanked by the moon and the sun, in a creative allusion to the darkness of the crucifixion. Through the representation of these two elements, the artist seeks to represent the moment when the death of Jesus Christ transformed the day into a dark night.
The collection of museological heritage in the Azores has a similar cross, with the inventory number MHASR920032. This model is also attributed to Spanish work, an example of which is found in the book "Encyclopedia de la Plata Española y Virreinal Americana", Alejandro Fernández et al., Edición de los Autores, Madrid, 1984, p.406, fig.1206; and South American work, such as that contained in the book "Plateria Virreynal - Arte y Tesoros del Peru", José Antonio de Lavale and Werner Lang, Banco de Credito del Peru en la Cultura, 1974, p. 62.
