BUYING IN AN AUCTION

Catalogues

Prior to each auction, a copiously-illustrated catalogue is published, offering detailed descriptions of each lot together with valuation estimates. The catalogue is the key reference instrument for bidding in an auction.

You can acquire the catalogue from Palácio do Correio Velho’s premises or request a copy by post, with payment on delivery. For this purpose you simply need to call 213 242 980 or contact-us here.

You can also subscribe to our catalogues and receive them in the comfort of your own home.

The exhibition

An exhibition will be organised prior to each auction, open to any interested persons. Entrance is free of charge. The exhibition will normally be open for two days, during the times indicated in the auction catalogue and in this site.

All items on display will be auctioned. They may be viewed in the Palácio do Correio Velho’s rooms, where they may be appreciated, handled and examined. If you require any clarification or need to examine a specific item, don’t hesitate to ask one of our employees for assistance. Carefully analyse the items that interest you.

The auction

The auction is held after the exhibition, in sessions held across one or more days. Entry to auctions is also free of charge. Even if you don’t want to make a bid, you can still attend the auction without any restriction.

If you intend to bid you should register around 30 minutes before the start of the auction. You will be given a bidding paddle with a number that you will use to bid for the lot(s) that interest you.

If you are unable to attend the auction, but nonetheless want to bid, you should complete, sign and return an Absentee / Telephone Bidding Slip.

After the auction (payment and withdrawal of lots)

If your bids have been successful and you were able to buy the lot(s) that interested you, you can pay at the end of the auction or wait for Palácio do Correio Velho to send you an invoice to your home address. After receiving the invoice, you have 5 working days to make the payment.

All purchased items should be withdrawn up to 15 days after the auction date. If they haven’t been collected within this deadline, they will be transferred to a warehouse and a storage fee will be charged, in accordance with the prevailing price list. For your convenience, Palácio do Correio Velho can provide you with contacts of one or more transporters offering this service.
